What does it take to be a good host?

This time, we are honoured to have singer, host, and 8FM DJ Ke Qing come to Oneworld Hanxin College to give a wonderful sharing session on the art of hosting and interviewing to the students of the Broadcasting, Television and Film Department.

In her sharing, she mentioned that to become an excellent DJ/host,
besides vocal skills, "empathy" is even more important.

Her key hosting tips:
The basic skills of a DJ are not just about tone of voice and clear pronunciation, but more importantly, understanding and feeling others.
Don't just ask questions according to the interview outline. A truly good host will listen carefully to every answer from the interviewee.
Learn to find new questions from the answers, allowing the interview to extend naturally, rather than mechanically asking and answering questions.
Listen first → Feel then → Empathize then → Ask questions.

When preparing for an interview, she also emphasized the importance of doing her homework.
She once interviewed the famous Malaysian singer, Fidel,
carefully studying past interviews with him before the interview and subtly bringing up related topics again during the interview. This question not only added depth to the interview,
but also gave the singer an opportunity to reinterpret and clarify past viewpoints.

This made her realize that—sometimes, the host is not just a questioner, but also a bridge for communication and understanding.

Finally, she reminded the students:
In the AI era,
vocal skills and emotions may be imitated,
but "personal uniqueness" can never be replaced.

Thoughts can be a little unconventional,
viewpoints can be a little unique,
because your uniqueness is your value.

Thank you, Ke Qing, for your wonderful sharing.
This exchange not only helped students better understand the art of radio hosting and interviewing,
but also brought them a lot of inspiration and motivation.
